Drug Uses
Allopurinol is indicated for curing of gout. It is used to treat high uric acid levels in the blood or urine caused by certain types of cancer chemotherapy. It is also can be used to cure certain patients with calcium oxalate kidney stones and high amounts of uric acid in the urine. It can also used for other conditions as advised by your physician.
How Taken
Allopurinol is taken orally. Call your doctor regarding the dosage suitable for your condition. To avoid stomach upset take Allopurinol with a meal. It is advised to drink extra fluids while undergoing healing with Allopurinol. It can take two to six weeks to receive the full benefit of Allopurinol. Continue taking this drug even if you feel well.

Allopurinol can cause dizziness or lightheadedness. These effects may worsen if Allopurinol is taken with alcohol. Use Allopurinol with caution. Don't drive or perform other possibly dangerous tasks until you know how you respond to this medicine. Follow the diet and exercise program given to you by your health care provider. If your symptoms do not improve or if they worsen, notify your doctor. Allopurinol should be used only by the patient for whom it has been prescribed. Don't take less or more or take it more often than advised by your doctor.
