"Strengthening CDM as a central pillar within China’s path to sustainable development"

   
 
 
 9th Regional Workshop in Sichuan

On 13 November 2009, the EU-China CDM Facilitation Project implemented the 9th Regional Workshop at Chengdu, Sichuan. The Policy Research Center for Environment and Economy (PRCEE) of Ministry of Environmental Protection (MEP) led the organization of the workshop, with the support from Sichuan Environmental Protection Bureau. The Sichuan workshop attracted over 100 participants, including local officials, representatives from local research institutes, and industrial sectors.

The national and local CDM and climate change experts presented and discussed the climate change and CDM development issues with the local stakeholders. Dr. Gao Qingxian, researcher of the Chinese Institute of Environmental Sciences presented the impact of climate change on ecosystem and the progress of international climate change efforts. Dr. Yang Hongwei from the CDM Project Management Center of the Energy Research Institute of the NDRC presented China’s national actions towards climate change and the CDM project cooperation in China. Dr. Li Liping from the PRCEE of MEP shared the perspective on national pollutant emission reduction programme and the CDM projects. Dr. Duan Maosheng from Tsinghua University shared his knowledge on CDM methodologies and his perspective on the future development of CDM in China. Dr. Tang Renhu from CDM office of Datang Power Company presented the procedure of CDM validation and verification, and shared his experience on the major issues during the procedure and potential solutions. Mr. Zhang Ning, the CEO of Greenfiled Ltd., a carbon consultant company, shared his knowledge on latest trend of international carbon market and analysed the CDM business risks. Mme. Tian Chunxiu from the PRCEE of MEP and Mr. Li Heyi, the General Engineer of Sichuan Environmental Protection Bureau chaired the workshop.

So far, the EU-China CDM Facilitation Project has implemented 9 regional workshops in different provinces and regions in China. These workshops have raised the local stakeholders’ awareness of CDM projects and the related business and development opportunities. The last regional workshop will be implemented in January 2010.
